The Opportunity

Join the City of Toronto’s Environment and Energy Division as an outcome-driven leader to provide strategic leadership and expert advice to ensure the successful management and delivery of the City of Toronto's climate change, energy, and environment programs, in addition to the City’s resilience strategy. Serving as a thought-leader in the field of environmental sustainability and climate change, you will take a proactive approach to the long-term planning, implementation, evaluation and performance improvement of environmental, climate, energy and related sustainability objectives, policies, programs and projects, including cross-corporate coordination and legislative compliance.

As the Executive Director, Environment & Climate you will develop, implement, and promote a holistic and cohesive resilience mandate aligned with the overall strategies of the City to deliver a sustainable foundation to respond to environmental challenges.

 

Position Overview

Reporting to the Deputy City Manager, Corporate Services, the Executive Director, Environment & Climate leads and integrates the City’s sustainability vision and initiatives to create value for its employees, residents, stakeholders, and partners. The Executive Director, Environment & Climate will be responsible for developing, designing, and implementing functional policies and programs that drive positive changes in the overall business performance based on long-term needs.  The Executive Director will contribute to the continuous improvement of divisional performance through insightful analysis and the development and implementation of sound management practices and procedures, provide program management staff with direction and guidance, mentorship and coaching, processes and tools to increase efficiencies and improve effectiveness of the services provided by the Division. The Executive Director is passionate about environmental sustainability and serving in a critical leadership role that drives change.

 

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

  • Participate as a senior member of the Corporate Services leadership team and serves on various committees providing sustainability-related input for the development of the Division’s objectives.
  • Create a resilience strategy that incorporates and responds to the overarching issues facing Toronto including organizational, legislative, and technological changes impacting the environmental, climate and energy management portfolio.
  • Lead the development of a comprehensive assessment of current policies, planning and sustainability activities to create a compelling vision for a resilience strategy to drive engagement, build on the City's strengths in technology and energy diversity and encourage innovation in the energy sector.
  • Provide a robust approach to setting objectives and targets for environmental and energy policies, systems, programs, and capital projects.
  • Lead and motivate a diverse workforce, ensure effective collaboration and teamwork, and encourage innovation in others.
  • Develop effective environmental, climate change and energy policy positions and business cases, presenting and promoting recommendations and proposals through the budget process and City Council Committees.

 

What You Bring:

  • Relevant education and/or experience in the fields of environmental sustainability, climate change, energy management, energy systems design, project development and implementation with progressively increasing levels of leadership responsibilities.
  • Leadership excellence in project/program execution and implementation through broad, strategic collaboration and buy-in.
  • An inclusive leadership approach that values diversity and builds effective leaders through coaching and mentoring others valuing differences and ensuring diverse perspectives are heard.
  • Exceptional stakeholder engagement experience with an ability to create and communicate a vision and strategy across a multifaceted set of partners, and effectively execute on the implementation of key priorities and plans.
  • Well-developed business acumen and results-oriented approach that can influence and build strong business partnerships, including working with and advising senior executives.
  • Evidence of championing the need for holistic service efforts supporting multiple lines of business to maintain awareness of emerging trends and best practices in all aspects of environmental sustainability.
  • Demonstrated experience leading high performing customer focused teams implementing high quality solutions in a timely manner.
  • Passion as a transformational leader, committed to public service and driving legacy initiatives.
